Lucky to be alive NORTH MELBOURNE  football hero Byron Pickett was lucky to escape death after crashing his car at high speed in the Melbourne suburb of Kensington early yesterday. Amazingly, Pickett the winner of the AFL's Norwich Rising Star award in 1998 walked unscathed from hospital just 90 minutes after the smash. The rugged defender renowned for crashing opponents on the field lost control of his late-model blue Commodore along Kensington Rd just after 6.15am. He clipped a fire hydrant, sending water high into the air, hit a light pole and came to rest near the centre median strip on Dynon Rd. The front section of the car was ripped out, leaving the engine about 70m from the body of the car. Police at the scene said the force of the impact suggested the car had been traveling at high speed. A police spokeswoman said officers were investigating the crash and it was possible the driver would be charged on summons with driving offences. Pickett was recuperating at home yesterday and would not talk about the accident. In a major boost for the AFL's NSW Auskick Registration Day, Carey and the premiership cup will tour Sydney in a helicopter, visiting locations in Lane Cove, Parramatta, Blacktown and Penrith. His teammates meanwhile, will be dispersed to various shopping centres, public reserves, and McDonalds restaurants in the city's west, south-west and Woolongong as part of their ongoing commitment to junior football.
